Data Ownership Translation Guide

  • Date: September 25, 2025

Data is a part of the infrastructure that helps transit agencies keep their communities moving. This translation guide builds on the Data Ownership Factsheet with tips for assessing your current data ownership status and culture, and best practices to ensure you own your data in the future, including examples of strong contract language. This resource is designed to help you begin to evaluate where you are now and provide you with things to consider as you move through future procurements.

N-CATT develops these factsheets to break down large topics for transit agencies and highlight how they apply to small-urban, rural, and tribal transit systems. The goal of these resources is to keep you informed on emerging and evolving technologies and topics so you can see how they apply to your transit agency. No technology is one-size-fits-all, and so we encourage you to read this resource and think about how this topic can impact your future planning.

We encourage you to reach out with any questions about this factsheet, or any questions this resource prompts that you need additional information about. Also, please provide any feedback you have on how to make these better! You can reach us at helpdesk@n-catt.org.
