Data Ownership Factsheet

  • Date: September 25, 2025

Data is an important asset that a transit agency has, even if it isn’t tangible. Data often comes from different softwares and other sources, so who owns the information needs to be spelled out from the start. This factsheet explains the implications of owning or not owning your data and how it can impact future technology decisions. This factsheet is designed to help you understand the fundamentals of data ownership and its effects, and our Data Ownership Translation Guide provides a deeper dive into how to work towards ensuring data ownership.

N-CATT develops these factsheets to break down large topics for transit agencies and highlight how they apply to small-urban, rural, and tribal transit systems. The goal of these resources is to keep you informed on emerging and evolving technologies and topics so you can see how they apply to your transit agency. No technology is one-size-fits-all, and so we encourage you to read this resource and think about how this topic can impact your future planning.

We encourage you to reach out with any questions about this factsheet, or any questions this resource prompts that you need additional information about. Also, please provide any feedback you have on how to make these better! You can reach us at helpdesk@n-catt.org.
